Round Lake Park District wants you to go fishing

The Round Lake Area Park District, in conjunction with the Huebner Fishery Management Foundation, is offering several events and programs to encourage residents to go fishing.

Join the Park District Virtual Fishing Derby, open to Round Lake Area Park District residents 17 and younger. Go fishing in Round Lake from the shore and send in a photo of the fish you catch. Take a photo of the fish with a ruler in the photo (must show fish from head to tail with ruler in photo). Entrants must reel in the fish themselves.

Entries will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 11. Submit your photo, along with name, address, type and size of fish, and date caught by email to kathy_paczynski@rlapd.org. Winners will be notified and can pick up prizes at the Community Center after Sept. 13. To register for the Virtual Fishing Derby, visit bit.ly/3losS42.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the park district will host the eighth annual Family Fishing Event from 10 a.m. to noon at Lakefront Park in Round Lake Beach, sponsored by the Huebner Fishery Management Foundation.

There will be a raffle for giveaways, free poles and bait. All individuals who are 16 and older are required to have a fishing license. Due to COVID-19 state guidelines, registration is required for this free event, and there will not be pontoon boat rides this year. To register for the event, visit bit.ly/3hp7o4F.

The Prairie Grass Nature Museum offers a program where residents can borrow fishing equipment - a fishing pole, a lead-free tackle packet, and a fishing guide - at no charge. Usually fishing equipment is available at the Prairie Grass Nature Museum during normal business hours, but the museum is currently closed.

When the museum is not open, contact Kathy Paczynski, recreation supervisor, at (847) 740-9823 or by email, kathy_paczynski@rlapd.org, to arrange to pick up fishing equipment at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center, 814 Hart Road, Round Lake, during registration hours. The amount of time to borrow the fishing equipment can be individualized.

The park district is also offering a gift card incentive to residents who buy a fishing license. Round Lake Area Park District residents ages 16-20 who purchase a fishing license through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources can receive a gift card from the park district.

Save the receipt from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and bring it to the Robert W. Rolek Community Center during registration hours to participate.
