Grayslake organizations team for artistic Bee Kind Project

The Grayslake Community Park District and Grayslake Arts Alliance recently installed the Bee Kind Project, an art piece, environmental education statement, and photo opportunity, in Central Park, 250 Library Lane, Grayslake.

In collaboration with the Grayslake Park District, members of the Grayslake Arts Alliance created two large, free-standing bees for people to pose with and snap a photo. Grayslake Art Alliance members Bonnie Shorr and her daughter, Katie Shorr, a freshman at Warren Township High School, came up with the idea of featuring bees.

"We wanted to raise awareness of the declining bee population and the importance of pollinators," Bonnie Shorr said. "The bees say, 'Bee Kind!' which reminds us to not only be kind to bees, but to our fellow humans, as well."

The bees begin their journey in Central Park and will be moving to different Grayslake parks to generate buzz about the importance of pollinators.

"We hope looking for the bees will encourage people to explore our parks while being active outside," Grayslake Park District Executive Director Kristin Splitt said.

"Spending time in parks, trails, and natural areas has numerous mental and physical health benefits, so the Grayslake Park District is proud to provide 33 park sites and over 240 acres of open space, wetlands, playgrounds, and ballfields for the Grayslake community."

"The Grayslake Arts Alliance is thrilled to partner with the Grayslake Park District on this one-of-a-kind project," said Paul Price, GAA Executive Board member and events committee chair.

"The GAA has been a bit silent since the pandemic started, so a community project like this is a great way to stay engaged with the public, and we couldn't 'bee' more excited with the results."
