'Plant a Pollinator Rain Garden' this weekend

The public is invited to this Kane County Farm Bureau event to help install a pollinator rain garden along Randall Road on the front lawn at the Farm Bureau.

"Plant a Pollinator Rain Garden"will be on Saturday, July 18 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, July 19 from noon-3:00 p.m. on the front lawn of the Kane County Farm Bureau, 2N710 Randall Road (Randall Road at Oak Street), St. Charles.

One out of every 3 bites of food we eat depends on pollinators. This environmentally friendly project will serve as a demonstration project for the public in attracting pollinators. It will also filter runoff from a parking lot and show local farmers a best management practice for stormwater management on farms.

The garden will be planted with native grasses and plants including black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpura) and Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya).

On Saturday, participants will receive a free lunch and an Earth Day T-shirt or hat compliments of the Kane County Farm Bureau Foundation.

On Sunday, a food truck will be on-site and Pollinator Garden planting will be followed by a 4 p.m., outdoor presentation of College Scholarship awards to 15 local students.

The KCFB Foundation will also sell tickets for their 2020 Vintage Truck Raffle all weekend up to the time of the Raffle drawing, Sunday at 5 p.m. The grand prize is a 1969 Chevrolet C-10 pickup truck, or $3,500 cash. Second prize is $500 in groceries and

third prize is $500 in fuel. The Vintage Truck Raffle is the primary fundraiser for KCFB Foundation college scholarships. The winner will be announced at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 19.
