Northbrook Park District Musical Captures the Experience of Actors During the Pandemic

Art is imitating life in the Northbrook Park District production of "The Show Must Go Online," presented by Northbrook Theatre Youth Company.

Parts are available for ages 8-14 for this virtual musical, created through Beat by Beat Press in response to the unusual circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic. The plot centers on a group of students who rally around their drama teacher to save their annual musical while sheltering in place and practicing physical distancing. Directed by Performing Arts Supervisor Drew Kambach, the production gives the opportunity for many of the actors to sing and act their own scenes.

"This production was made for the unique situation we find ourselves in today and it opens up a lot of opportunities to be creative in a new digital format," Kambach said. "We have performed shows from these creators before and I find them to be accessible and a lot of fun!"

Virtual rehearsals begin Tuesday, June 30, with the show pre-recorded and set to premier online Tuesday, August 25. For the final production, each scene will be recorded by the actors and mixed together to create the show.

Putting on a show in this type of format offers a unique opportunity for actors to be creative with backgrounds and add their own touches through costumes and props, Kambach said.

"This is a challenge to tackle a strictly digital format," he said. "We are excited to provide this experience and creative opportunity. I am excited for the actors to feel empowered with the technical aspects of the production."
