Esports Rocket League announces its spring champions and a new summer league
Naperville Park District offered for the first time an opportunity for players of all ages to participate in a 3 v 3 esports Rocket League competition this spring in partnership with GGLeagues, a recreational esports league based in Chicago. Rocket League is a video soccer game held in a virtual stadium featuring rocket-powered cars playing in a challenging, fast-paced soccer contest with elements of a demolition derby.
The free introductory session attracted many players and launched a successful first season providing fun and friendly competition during the stay-at-home order this spring. Playoffs took place on May 30. The park district and GGLeagues recently announced the first Naperville Rocket League Champions. They are as follows:
• Division A Champion: XBG, captain Kent Lullo; and runner-up: STL, captain James Caddis
• Division B Champion: Chubby Tubby, captain Charlie Madzinski; and runner-up: The Moments, captain Nathan P
• Division C1 Champion: Rage Mode, captain Markie Ruane; and runner-up: RAL Ballers, captain Logan Hoag
• Division C2 Champion: BJJRGoated, captain Carrie Larson; and runner-up: The Foxes, captain Steve Hagino
The new summer Rocket League will begin June 24, with registration open through June 14. Players will be placed in one of three divisions, depending on skill, regardless of age:
In the Naperville Park District Cup, the Rocket League Division A is the most competitive level league. Players can be at any skill level. Division B is the medium level league. Players must be at the gold or platinum skill level; players higher than platinum are not eligible for this division. Division C is the most beginner-friendly league. Players must be at gold skill level or below to be eligible.
Participants in the park district league may form a team or register solo. Six weeks of play will conclude with playoffs in week seven and medals will be awarded to the division winners.
The Rocket League games will take place on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. from June 24-Aug. 5.
Rocket League may be played on any platform including PS4, Xbox, PC or Nintendo Switch. Internet service is required to play against someone else.
