Gail Borden Public Library goes 'Fines Free' for most materials

Due to these unprecedented times, many Gail Borden Public Library District patrons will find that their previously blocked library cards are now unblocked.

"We have been studying this for quite awhile. We have prioritized evaluation in response to this stay-at-home time period and we feel this would greatly benefit our community," said Gail Borden Public Library CEO Carole Medal. "Thanks to action that the library board of trustees took at their April meeting, we are happy to announce that Gail Borden is going 'fines free' now and into the future for most of our materials. This decision will unblock thousands of cards for people to use right now to take advantage of our virtual products."

Extended use fees or fines have been eliminated for checked-out books (cards that have been blocked due to not returning materials may not be unblocked).

Other fine-free materials include DVDs, CDs and audiobooks not available via a media dispenser.

Checked-out items that remain subject to extended use fees include media dispenser materials such as Blu-Rays and DVDs at all three Gail Borden Library locations.

Other items that will be assessed overdue fines include those available from the "Library of Things" as well as video games and board games, eReaders, Launchpads, Playaway Views, Read-alongs, toys, kits and art prints.

All of these items will be subject to the reduced overdue fine of 25 cents per day.

Children will still be able to read off the fines for overdue youth materials, such as toys, American Girl dolls, microscopes, games and kits.

Library customers will still be charged for damaged items and for items not returned.

For questions about specific items, library customers can email gbplweb@gailborden.info or text (847) 754-4599.

Library officials are encouraging people to check their library account status at innovative.gailborden.info/patroninfo~S20/.

The library offers virtual access to books, movies and more right now via the "24/7 library" at www.gailborden.info/elibrary.
