Schaumburg Library stops charging fines

A new policy at the Schaumburg Township District Library means no fines for borrowers. The policy was approved in a vote this week by trustees.

"Fines create a barrier to accessing our materials, and our goal is to provide information and resources for our entire community, with minimal limitations," said Executive Director Annie Miskewitch.

The library was already fine free for seniors and it had implemented automatic renewals to keep patrons from incurring fines. Fines currently account for only about 0.25% of the library's budget.

"The board is proud to support this move to be a fine-free library," said board President Anita Forte-Scott. "Thanks to this change, more than 1,350 of our patrons once again have access to our materials as we've forgiven the fines currently on their accounts. This includes more than 430 kids and teens and more than 490 low-income households."
