Humanitarian Service Project launches campaign to combat hunger amid crisis

The Humanitarian Service Project of Carol Stream started a new community engagement campaign to fight local hunger titled "Spring into Action." They are currently at $23,645 of their $25,000 goal.

Through the campaign, the nonprofit is seeking community support to fight hunger among vulnerable populations of DuPage and Kane counties, namely low-income children and senior citizens. In response to school closures, potential lost income, and the threat of increased isolation due to COVID-19, the charity will be increasing the amount of food support it provides to families in DuPage and Kane.

As part of the initiative, the charity is calling upon community members to directly "adopt" local families and senior citizens with monetary support.

The funds raised by the campaign will be utilized to provide hunger relief to over 700 children, their families, and 140 senior citizens throughout DuPage and Kane counties. Through its programs, the Humanitarian Service Project distributes 120 tons of groceries to low-income residents of DuPage and Kane counties, with a special focus on providing groceries to families when school is out of session.

Kristin Senne, executive director, said, "The impact of the current crisis has shown how vulnerable populations like senior citizens and children are to the impact of hunger. On a daily basis, HSP sees children whose families have no way of providing vital nutrition despite parents working full-time, and senior citizens having to decide between spending their limited incomes on rent, medical costs, and food. Unfortunately, we expect to see these needs deepen with the potential loss of household income as a result of the current pandemic. This campaign is an opportunity for the community to come together and lend a hand to our neighbors who need support."

The mission of the Humanitarian Service Project is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty brings to seniors and children in DuPage and Kane counties.

During the last Christmas Offering Project, 2,152 children and 140 seniors received gifts and over 20 tons of groceries being distributed.

With the Senior Citizen Project, it provides monthly grocery deliveries of vital nutritious food, and other necessities to 140 low-income seniors.

Through the Children's Project, it provides for the nutritional, emotional, and academic needs of more than 700 low-income children. In 2019, though the three programs, it distributed approximately 120 tons of groceries to people in need.
