Veterans can sign up for Flightless Honor Flight

Veterans from all war and peacetime eras who have not had the opportunity to take their tribute Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and are no longer able to travel, are invited to participate in a Flightless Honor Flight.

This special Honor Flight is co-sponsored by Lake County Honor Flight, JourneyCare and Lake Zurich School District 95.

The first flightless event is intended to offer an Honor Flight-like tribute to veterans who may be too frail to travel long distances or suffer from poor health and are unable to fly.

This Flightless Honor Flight will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at Lake Zurich High School Performing Arts Center, 300 Church St., in Lake Zurich. Space is limited; register online at www.journeycare.org/honor.

Each veteran will have a "guardian" (family member or friend) seated with them for the program. Any veteran not bringing their own guardian will have a volunteer guardian to assist them.

Additional family members and friends are welcome to attend and be part of the Welcome Home celebration. Special parking is available for veterans' vehicles, and wheelchairs will be provided, if needed.

Volunteers will assist veterans with entering the building and finding their reserved seats.

The free event will include state and local dignitaries, a video of the memorials usually visited during an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., a Mail Call and a Welcome Home celebration, to be followed by light refreshments.
