Young ones participate in squirrelly STEM learning at Vernon Area Library

On Tuesday, January 28, Lincolnshire-based Vernon Area Library hosted hands-on events for preschoolers and early grade school students to engage them in science and math activities centered around squirrels.

Children as young as three and as old as second grade took part in stories, games and a craft to nurture their ability to observe the world around them and to foster math skills. Parents pitched in to help their students during two sessions of "Squirrel STEM Spectacular," which drew more than 40 children.

Each child went home with a squirrel feeder, which they had made using a whole grain breakfast cereal. One patron later sent an email to event organizers, showing how a squirrel on their balcony enjoyed the snack, offering their family a chance to safely watch the critter up close as it chowed down.

Vernon Area Public Library regularly hosts hands-on learning programs for preschoolers and grade school students. Events are free and open to the public; no library card is required.
