DuPage County Forest Preserve District showcasing volunteer opportunities

Residents interested in becoming DuPage County Forest Preserve District volunteers will have two chances this month to learn about what's involved and some of the available options.

The Volunteer Open House will showcase the district's 50 volunteer opportunities and 10 volunteer programs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 11, at district headquarters, 3S5800 Naperville Road in Wheaton.

A PowerPoint presentation at 10 a.m. will highlight each program, but attendees can talk to current volunteers and staff members throughout the event.

The district also will offer a one-hour information session starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at its headquarters that features a general overview of volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers introduce school groups and families to nature, bring history to life, and care for animals. They restore critical habitats and help visitors explore forest preserve trails and discover new outdoor activities such as archery, kayaking and geocaching.

Adults, junior volunteers and families can choose from weekly, monthly and one-time opportunities. Scout groups, church groups, corporations and community organizations can coordinate group workdays that bring members together through shared accomplishments.
