Learn about the Progressive Christian movement at Elgin church Jan. 12

On Sunday, Jan. 12, join in a discussion about "What's a Church?" during the 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. services at First Congregational Church of Elgin, 256 E. Chicago St.

While the news has been focused on the changes with Roman Catholic churches after Vatican II and the growth of Protestant megachurches in the United States, there has been a slow revolution in the formerly mainline Protestant churches about what it means to be church. The "Progressive Christian" movement is one such change.

From old-line to mainline to mega church, just what a church is under great revision and debate in these times. They will ask: "What does it mean to be church, to be the Body of Christ in post-modern times?"

The theme of the worship services will be coupled with a "Discovery Time" examination of the church's 2020 budget at 9:15 a.m.

All are welcome!

The church has selected Rev. Jesse Tanner as its new minister, starting Jan. 13. He attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston and received a Master of Theological Studies. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Unity Institute and Seminary in Missouri. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in comparative religions from the University of the West in Rosemead, California.
