Don't let beauty of Christmas overshadow season of gratitude

"In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

- 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

My son called to let me know he found Christmas music playing on his favorite radio station. He wasn't complaining, because like many of us, he loves those yuletide carols.

I noticed the movies are trending along as well. A few channels are showing Christmas movies in November to offer an early welcome to the season. Those who enjoy the heartfelt traditional stories just can't get enough of them.

I admit, I can get caught up in listening to Christmas carols and watching a few festive movies too. But, for me, November gives way to its own traditional holiday known as Thanksgiving. So, as the month rolls on, I try to focus my attention toward the true purpose of the Thanksgiving holiday, which is gratitude.

Gratitude is a part of having a positive attitude, and it's one that helps us connect with God. To be grateful doesn't require all to be going well in our life. I've had some times where all I could do was wipe away the tears as I mentally battled the negative thoughts of loss or fear.

But I discovered, even during those times, there's something miraculous that we don't understand about gratitude. One of my favorite Bible passages to hold on to during troubled times is: "Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy" (Psalm 126:5).

I believe when we sow our work along with gratitude, even though it's hard, somewhere along the line God will come through and we will reap a joyful blessing.

I recently heard about a study on gratitude. The university conducting the study reported that people who tend to be grateful for things in their lives not only have more positive outlooks, but positive outcomes as well.

They have better relationships and live longer, healthier lives. Understanding God's principle of gratitude, this made sense. It confirmed to me to not let the beauty of the Christmas season overshadow the season of gratitude.

When overburdened or stressed, we may struggle with how to be grateful. I think if we thank God for a few simple things, it will help us move in the right direction.

We can be thankful for any bit of health we possesses. We can be glad we have a friend - even if it's a furry one. And, above all, we can thank God for his grace and hope for better things.

So, for those who enjoy an early Christmas bargain, movie or some tunes, I figure what better way to welcome in the season by placing our focus on Thanksgiving with a taste of Christmas.
