Vintage gas station collectibles from Ray's Auto Service in Mundelein on auction Nov. 16

Mention Ray's Auto Service to any car guy within 100 miles of Mundelein and the answer will always be "the place with all the great old gas station memorabilia."

The shop, located at 404 E. Hawley St. in Mundelein, was started in 1947 by Ray Bauernsmith.

Generations of people had their cars serviced by Ray and his son, Jim, and had the chance to view the amazing array of items the lined the walls and ceiling of the shop.

"It was truly like a museum," recalled one longtime customer. "Every time you went there you saw something new."

The collection included vintage gas pumps, signs, old car parts, advertising, and just about anything that related to the gas station industry.

Ray died at the age of 87 in 2015 followed by his son Jim in 2018. The family has now decided it is time to pass the amazing collection on to the next generation to enjoy.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, Donley Auctions, 8512 S. Union Road in Union, will conduct the sale at 2 p.m.

Viewing will take place on Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the auction start.

Auctioneer Randy Donley states that, "We are honored to be chosen to conduct this auction. Ray's Auto was an iconic area landmark. Everyone knew Ray and Jim as not only expert but honest mechanics. Their memorabilia collection is impressive and I invite everyone to attend the auction."
