Glenbard Parent Series to host author of 'I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter' Nov. 20

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Glenbard Parent Series Navigating Healthy Families will host an author event with Erika Sánchez.

The author of the bestseller “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” will speak at 7 p.m. at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn.

Through generations of families, it has been perceived that the ideal Mexican daughter does not go away to college and does not move out of her parents' house after high school graduation because she shouldn't abandon her family. Julia is not your ideal Mexican daughter. That was her sister's role. But when a tragic accident on a busy Chicago street causes her sister's death, Julia is left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family.

Sánchez's book is both heart wrenching and humorous. Julia's story is an empowering, coming-of-age tale about losing a sister and shattering stereotypes to find herself amid the pressures, anxieties and expectations of growing up as a Mexican-American.

Sánchez is a contemporary young adult author and 2017 National Book Award finalist. She is a poet, feminist and cheerleader for young women. She was the advice columnist for Cosmopolitan for Latinas for three years. Sánchez's writings echo the thoughts and ideas she wanted to read as a young adult and have appeared in numerous publications.

Glenbard South students will hear Sánchez during the day.

Continuing professional development units are available for the evening presentation.
