Get in Christmas spirit with The Festival Chorus concert

The Festival Chorus will present its annual Christmas concert of classical, contemporary and seasonal works from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Harper College, Building R, Performance Center, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.

Tickets, $12-$18 and free for children 12 and younger, are available at harpercollege.edu/boxoffice or by calling (847) 925-6100.

Starting in mid-August, members of the chorus assembled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. every Monday in Room P202 of the Music Instruction Building at Harper College to begin preparation for the Christmas concert.

Returning this season after two years working on her Ph.D. in music education at the University of Michigan, Sarah Inendino, assistant director, is more than ready to use her expertise not just to teach, but to inspire chorus members.

Inendino, originally from Michigan, graduated with high honors from Interlochen Arts Academy. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education at Northwestern University, with a specialty in choral education. She then went on to complete her Master of Arts at Columbia University in New York.

In addition to schooling, Sarah spent time building her career. She conducted children's choirs and taught general music and chorus for eight years in Glenview. While at U of M, she was assistant choral conductor for the Michigan Youth Ensembles.

In addition to currently being with The Festival Chorus, she is director of the Cantabile Choir for the Schaumburg Youth Choir and is on the vocal faculty for the Chicago High School for the Arts.

Attendees will hear Inendino's influence during the performance of four pieces she is conducting: the Mark Wilberg arrangement of "Deck the Halls," the Heveningham and Dickau composition "If Music Be the Food of Love," Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus," and "When the Earth Stands Still" by Don Macdonald.

The performance, which is accompanied by a professional orchestra, will also include Joel Raney's "Hope! A Gospel Christmas Celebration," Dan Forrest's arrangement of "The First Noel," Bob Krogstad's arrangement of "Festive Noels" and three songs from "Home Alone" by John Williams. Director Greg Tipps will conduct these.
