Enjoy music, history and more at Gail Borden Library this month

• As part of the "Elgin Alive" series, learn how World War II and D-Day impacted Elgin citizens both at home and abroad at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Historian Jerry Turnquist will tell stories of how local residents lived through these challenging and uncertain times through newspaper clippings and photos from 75 years ago. • On Thursday, Nov. 14, Elgin Area School District U-46 CEO Tony Sanders will discuss a variety of topics at 7 p.m. in the Meadows Community Rooms at the main library. He will give a talk about the latest school district news, anecdotes, facts and figures and more. To register, go to gailborden.info/register or call (847) 429-4597. • More than 20 tabletop trees from traditional to whimsical will be on display at the popular "Festival of Trees" from Nov. 11-22 at the main library. Sponsored by local organizations and businesses, the trees will be located on the library's second floor. After the exhibit, the trees will be auctioned off at the "Fest & Folly" Gala Nov. 23 at the St. Charles Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the Ecker Center for Mental Health and Renz Addiction Counseling Center. For information, visit eckercenter.org/fest-and-folly/.

• The Trés Belle Soprano Trio will perform a variety of music from opera standards to Broadway as part of the library's Sunday Afternoon Concert Series at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the main library. Come hear ensemble and solo hits like "Can't Help Lovin' That Man," Schubert's "Ave Maria," "O mio babbino caro," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "Barcarolle" and a lovely Gershwin medley. Meet the artists and enjoy refreshments after the concert. Free tickets are available at any library location.

• The 1950s will come alive with cabaret duo Matt and Cynthia Gruel at "Music in the Stacks: Unforgettable Music of the 1950s" from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Rakow Branch, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin. Rock out with the hits of Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry and many more at this free concert. No registration is necessary.
