Schaumburg park farm will demonstrate meat preservation in the 1800s

Discover how 19th-century families survived rough Midwest winters using meat preservation techniques at Schaumburg Park District's From Hog House to Smokehouse.

The event is set for noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Spring Valley's Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

Activities include sausage stuffing at the farm house, meat curing at the smokehouse and hog butchering at the tool house.

Admission is $3 per person and $12 per family. Children ages 3 and younger are free.

Children's activities will be available throughout the event. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at the Farm Visitor Center.

Parking will be available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. A free wagon shuttle will take visitors to the farm. For more information, call (847) 985-2102 or visit parkfun.com.
