ECC to host rescheduled 'We Rise Gala' Nov. 15

Elgin Community College's "We Rise Gala: A Community Fundraiser for Undocumented, DACA, and Mixed Status Families" will take place Friday, Nov. 15.

The rescheduled Latinx Heritage Month closing event will run from 6 to 10:30 p.m. in the Jobe Lounge, Building B, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

The evening will feature a keynote address by Dra. Aurora Chang, assistant professor and program chair in higher education at Loyola University Chicago. Once an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, Chang's research focuses on the intersection of education, identity, and agency within traditionally marginalized communities. She currently focuses on undocumented students' paths of educational survival, resistance, and persistence, how these experiences affect the American sociopolitical landscape, and what educators can do to support them.

The gala also will feature entertainment from local salsa and jazz band Projecto 7, dinner, and dancing.

Proceeds from the gala will go towards a scholarship fund to support undocumented, DACA, and mixed-status students to gain access to financial assistance and resource within the ECC community.

General admission for the gala is $35 for community members, $12 for students.

Tickets can be purchased online at elgin.edu/lhm. Please purchase tickets by Friday. Nov. 8.
