CCU sponsor offers 15, $2,000 scholarships

Consumers Cooperative Association, sponsor for Consumers Credit Union, has announced that it will award $30,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors.

The scholarships will be awarded to 15 high school seniors, each of whom will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The scholarship program assists credit union members who plan to continue their education and attend an accredited 2-plus year college, university or trade school of the student's choice for the 2020-21 academic year.

"CCA has been fortunate to assist high school seniors in pursuing their educational opportunities through this scholarship program for the past 41 years," CCA Chairman Kathleen Crews said.

"The application process provides students the opportunity to share their goals and aspirations, as well as to present their academic credentials. Our scholarship committee is always impressed with the thoughtfulness and insight students provide during this process. We look forward to reviewing this year's applications."

The CCA scholarship program generated 163 applications last year, with students from 53 different high schools and seven different states submitting applications. This year's applicants will be evaluated in the following categories: academic performance, financial need and leadership abilities, including community involvement.

Applicants on pace to graduate from high school by spring of 2020 are eligible to apply, provided the applicant and/or their parent/guardian has been a member of Consumers Credit Union for a minimum of one year. Those awarded scholarships will be recognized at the credit union's annual meeting March 11, 2020.

Applications are available on the Consumers Cooperative Association's page of CCU's website at myconsumers.org. Applications must include a transcript through the student's junior year and a copy of first semester grades from the current academic year, if available. Otherwise, applicants should include their senior class schedule. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31, providing ample time for interested students to apply.

"We encourage all eligible students to apply for one of the 15 scholarships," CCU CEO Sean M. Rathjen said.

"CCU understands the importance of recognizing the academic achievements of our youth, which is one reason both the credit union and the association are so committed to advancing the higher education of tomorrow's leaders. We're proud to support this important initiative made possible by Consumers Cooperative Association, CCU's sponsor."
