Colonial Cafe celebrates 60 years on St. Charles' east side

Colonial Cafe's is celebrating 60 years at its east side St. Charles location. The restaurant at 1625 E. Main St. (Route 64) opened its doors for business on Oct. 1, 1959.

The menu featured 11 sandwiches, french fries, soup of the day, chili and the Colonial ice cream sundaes and shakes.

"After much success of my father's 'Snappy Snack' concept of serving a limited menu of 16 cent 'Tasty Burgers' and 10 cent 'Krispy Fries,' he decided to expand the offerings and open up the Colonial Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop at 1625 E. Main in St. Charles," shared board chairman Tom Anderson. "I worked here as a teenager and haven't stopped working for Colonial Café since!"

The popular menu has developed into full breakfast and lunch variety, plus evening dinner choices, including breakfast for dinner. The ice cream treats served in glass are nostalgic, and the famous Kitchen Sink is fun to share.

"Sixty years ago, the grand opening ad for our East Main Street invited guests near and far to 'drive out and see the Valley's newest ice cream and sandwich shop," added Colonial Café President Clinton Anderson. "It is our honor to invite you to drive out and enjoy our new décor with two fireplaces, stone, wood, and metal accents, a private room, and even a Colonial Ice Cream History Museum."
