Jazz Consortium Big Band Returns to Elmhurst's Fitz's Spare Keys, Appearing Monthly

"Back by popular demand" is a well-worn show-biz phrase, but it applies perfectly as the 17-piece Jazz Consortium Big Band returns to Fitz's Spare Keys, 119 N. York St., Elmhurst, beginning Sunday, September 22, 6:00-9:00 p.m. for an extended residency the fourth Sunday each month. Cover charge at the eclectic music/restaurant/bowling alley venue is $10 for adults, $5 for students 17 and under, with food and beverage service all evening.

The group features swing and jazz-rock favorites from the repertoire of such iconic Big Bands as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson, as well as band-members' originals.

"Our two performances last spring at Fitz's were so well-received, we decided to try regular monthly appearances," said bandleader Roy Vombrack. "Fitz's already features Big Bands several other days during the month, so we're excited to be a part of Fitz's roster."

He added, "While we feature that 'Big Band sound', our selections lean more toward music for listening than dancing, and you can eat and drink while you listen to our music. We will also be showcasing local high school jazz bands to open for us at Fitz's."

With a line-up of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section, the Jazz Consortium Big Band was founded in 1975 by college music student friends with a love of Big Band music. The group performed in club and concert venues throughout the Midwest, including the Chicago Jazz Festival. The bandmembers went on to prolific professional careers in the studio and on stage with a wide range of entertainers and Big Band icons, including Tony Bennett, Maynard Ferguson, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra.

Currently the band - with mostly all original members - continues to share its love of the "Big Band sound" at clubs, concerts and special events throughout the area, bringing its variety of Swing, Latin, Jazz-Rock and Funk Big Band sounds to audiences of all ages.
