Two volunteers honored for work with Glenbard South Boosters

Jude Locke and Carrie Shiring are the recipients of the 2019 Glenbard South Boosters Jerry Weinstein Memorial Award for service. Now in its 32nd year, the Weinstein award is presented to individuals who exemplify commitment, dedication and extraordinary achievement in support of Glenbard South's students and community as demonstrated by the late Jerry Weinstein, South's first Boosters president.

"I feel it is a parent's responsibility to volunteer and support the schools and that is what I did," said Jude Locke about her service to Boosters.

Locke attended all the Boosters meetings from 2008 to 2014 and served as secretary and co-president of the organization. She volunteered for a number of events throughout the six years her daughters were enrolled at South and before that during their time at Arbor View Elementary and Glen Crest Middle School.

Locke, currently a fourth-grade teacher at Arbor View, "did whatever was needed at the time to help the school and move (Glenbard South) forward as best I could. We all worked for a common good and I was simply a part of that team."

Carrie Shiring's variety of contributions to Boosters included newsletter mailings (2006-08), vice president of volunteers and Booster Barbeque Chair (2013-14) and vice president of volunteers (2013-14.)

"Boosters make Glenbard South a community," Shiring said. "Boosters allows parents to get to know one another, financially support our school, and celebrate our students. I enjoyed attending and participating in the many Boosters events. The volunteers' creativity and commitment made these events special. It was fun having these opportunities to meet other parents and to celebrate students' achievements. I am grateful to the committee chairs and volunteers that run our programs, some for many years. I am very thankful to the wonderful people I met and the huge commitments they made to support our school and our students."

The award will be presented by Principal Sandra Coughlin at halftime of South's varsity home football game on Sept. 13 vs. Barlett, during Raider Pride Night.

"It's a great way to celebrate Jude and Carrie's amazing contributions to South when many future Raiders and their families will be in attendance," said Mark Pfefferman, Boosters secretary.

The winners are also honored with inscriptions on a plaque in the halls of the high school.
