Honoring the 400th Anniversary of the Landing of the Mayflower 1620-2020

The Eli Skinner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution joins with other chapters in sponsoring a nationwide American History essay contest for students in the 5, 6, 7, and 8th grades in public, private, and home schools in order to encourage the students' interest in American History.

Participants are asked to pretend that they are passengers on the Mayflower and that they need to decide what to take on their journey to the New World. In writing the essay, they must consider only items and materials that were available in 1620. Then later, looking back after a time spent living in New Plymouth Colony, how they would have changed their choices and their reasons for doing so.

Students are required to follow the strict guidelines prepared by the DAR National American History Committee. The essays need to be received from students in our area by November 18. 2019 The Eli Skinner Chapter will announce their over all chapter winner of the essay competition at their awards meeting in February 2020. The essay will be entered in the District IV competition

The chapter is named in honor of Eli Skinner, who fought in the Revolution. He was a native of Connecticut. Years after his service, he came west with his family to what is now Elk Grove. Illinois. He is one of the only two Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Cook County.
