Radford Green's Reigning Celebrity

"When she first got here, she sat in her wheelchair with her head down. She was sad and scared," said Cathie Khouri about her mother, Edie London. Edie was one of the earliest residents of Radford Green Healthcare and Rehabilitation at Sedgebrook senior living community in Lincolnshire. Edie now holds her head high as she is the much-beloved, longest-term resident at Radford Green. "She's wonderful and gracious," said Keegan Sawyer, administrator for Radford Green. "She and her family have been an integral part of our history, and have watched us grow and evolve, all while retaining our top-rated service and care."

Sedgebrook retirement community offers independent living for active seniors. Radford Green, its Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, provides assisted living, memory support, short- and long-term rehabilitation, and skilled nursing care.

Late last month, Edie was honored at Radford Green's 10th-anniversary celebration. "She was the celebrity of the evening. We gave her a shout-out, and she earned a well-deserved round of applause. She had a number of family members there to help us honor her," said Keegan.

Cathie said that over the years, her mother has thrived from the thoughtfulness and kindness of the Radford Green staff. "My mom really basks in their attention," she said.

Prior to her move to Radford Green, Edie had been living in a high-rise apartment in the city. "After my dad passed away, she started to show signs of dementia, and it got to the point that she needed care. She had a live-in caregiver for more than six years, but then my mom had a fall, and it was too much for the gal living with her to handle," said Cathie. "My brother Rick and I needed to find long-term care."

A childhood friend of Cathie's suggested that she look at Radford Green. Her friend's father-in-law had been a resident at Sedgebrook and when his health changed, moved to Radford Green. Cathie recalled, "On her recommendation, Rick and I went to Radford Green and upon visiting the community, concluded that this was the best place for our mom."

Cathie said that her mom has always received outstanding care, and the staff is loving, attentive, and collaborative. "My brother and I have excellent relationships with the staff. They're first-rate, and we know she's in good hands. Not only do they let us know if she is having a rough day, but they also text us pictures of my mom having a great time. They want us to see how well she is doing on a good day," she said.

The staff, Cathie said, is made up of "really compassionate people and are very responsive to our requests. They do their best to make sure that my mom has makeup on, her hair is done, and she's nicely dressed. That was always important to my mom, and we want her to continue with as much normalcy and dignity as possible. We know they really love my mom!"

"My mom loves music. She tries to sing, and she remembers words to songs and enjoys anything musical. The staff has learned what works for her, and I'm so impressed with that." said Cathie. "She also loves kids and babies, and if she is having a rough day, they will often show her pictures and videos of their families. Those are things that make her happy, and they're things that the staff follows up with. They give my mom a lot of attention."

Cathie said that she recommends Radford Green to others looking for care for their loved ones. "You can't do any better than that," she said.
