Elgin's First United Methodist Church concludes 'Proverbial Opera' series Aug. 18

The nine-week "Proverbial Opera" series at Elgin's First United Methodist Church wraps up this Sunday, Aug. 18.

For the past several weeks, the Rev. Rick Carlson has offered a summer message series entitled "Proverbial Opera," an exploration of King Solomon's wisdom illustrated by arias from the world's great operas.

Each week a performer has featured a selection from the works of Puccini, Mozart, Offenbach and others.

This week's performance will be "Soave sia il vento" ("May the wind be gentle") from "Cosi Fan Tutte" by 18th-century Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

It will be sung by mezzo-soprano Karen Archbold, bass-baritone Jim Hinton, and soprano Solange Sior. The trio will be accompanied by Jonathan Besancon.

A free benefit for Fox Valley Lyrical Productions will follow the worship. It will feature a silent auction, performances from several members of the Fox Valley Lyrical Productions company and light refreshments.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

First United Methodist Church is located 216 E. Highland Ave. in downtown Elgin. Free parking is available in the garage across the street. The building is handicap accessible.
