Mission trip youth to lead service at Elgin church Aug. 18

On Sunday, Aug. 18, First Congregational Church of Elgin will celebrate its youth mission trip at the 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. services.

Twenty-two youth and adult sponsors journeyed to Providence, Rhode Island, to participate in urban ministries there.

While the task of a mission trip is to do good for others, the gain of a mission trip is in the spiritual and personal growth of the participants involved.

The youth will lead the worship services. All are welcome.

The mission is extended with a discussion period at the 9 a.m. "Discovery Time" about just what and how the congregation could phrase a doctrinal statement on being open and affirming of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, the church will hold its outdoor worship in Lords Park in Elgin at 10:15 a.m. for its annual church picnic.

In addition to a message on "Surprises About God in the Bible," the congregation will feast, explore nature and play games. All are welcome to attend.

First Congregational Church, Elgin's oldest church, is located at 256 E. Chicago St.
