Broadway performers to present free show 8/15 addressing teen issues

PURE Creative Arts, a Manhattan and London based group of Broadway-level professionals, will present a high-energy, engaging show called The Rating Game at Wheeling High School on Thursday, August 15 at 7 p.m. The program is free and students, parents and community members are welcome to attend.

The Rating Game, a rap-pop musical following the journey of six young people as they explore the question of "Who am I?" will be addressing important issues facing teens and parents in today's society..

Emily Rabinowitz, District 214 Career Discovery (Media/Fine Arts) supervisor, said that the performance provides "a more indirect, but intentional way to get students to talk" about various issues they face today, such as eating disorders, chemical dependency, suicide and more.

"They really try to encompass as much as possible," shared Rabinowitz.

Wheeling High School students will be treated to a high-caliber performance and small group sessions during the day. The 7 p.m. performance will be open to all students, parents and community members.

A question and answer session will follow the impactful performance that is about 45 minutes long. Rabinowitz said there will be a Spanish translator at the event as well.

"PURE Creative Arts has a unique method of using theater productions to address and explore challenges around identity and self-esteem faced by young people," said Cherry Farrington, of PURE Creative Arts.

Farrington said that young people in today's society face various questions and challenges regarding their identity and self-worth especially through messaging via the media and today's culture and this performance can help both students and parents deal with those challenges.

Rabinowitz says the performance provides a safe place for teens to explore various issues, connect with others and realize that they are not alone and everyone has challenges they are facing.
