First Congregational Church to discuss 'Why Solar?' Aug. 11
On Sunday, Aug. 11, First Congregational Church of Elgin will take a clear look at the future during its morning program.
At the 8:15 and 10:15 a.m., worship will be led by the Rev. Justo Gonzalez II, the interim Conference Minister for the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ (if it weren't for the fact that our tradition does not have bishops, he would be the bishop!).
Gonzalez, a native of Puerto Rico, is working will Illinois churches to position themselves for the future. He will explore the excitement of the future and being the "city on the hill."
At 9 a.m., the church's Eco-Group will lead a discussion on the importance of reducing the church's use of carbon-based fuels and how the church can do this through adding solar panels to its roofs.
While there are significant economic advantages to solar energy, the focus this Sunday will be on the moral imperative to reducing reliance on fossil fuels in order to do their part to reduce global warming.
First Congregational Church, Elgin's oldest church, is located at 256 E. Chicago St.
