'Proverbial Opera' summer sermon series continues Aug. 4

At Elgin's First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rick Carlson continues the nine-part summer message series titled "Proverbial Opera," an exploration of King Solomon's wisdom illustrated by arias from the world's great operas.

The seventh installment of the series on Aug. 4 will feature soprano Solange Sior and mezzo-soprano Karen Archbold will perform the "Barcarolle" ("Belle Nuit") from the "Tales of Hoffmann" by Jacques Offenbach.

The Rev. Carlson's message, "How You Done Me Wrong" is based on Proverbs 5:3-4.

Each week, a performer sings a selection from the works of Puccini, Mozart, Offenbach and others.

The series is presented in collaboration with Solange Sior and Fox Valley Lyrical Productions (formerly Soiree Lyrique).

Worship is at 9 a.m. at the historic church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in downtown Elgin. The church is handicap accessible.

You can also hear the service at 11 a.m. Sundays on radio WRMN 1410AM.

Free parking is available in the parking deck across the street. For details, visit www.fumcelgin.org or call (847) 741-0038.
