Literacy Volunteers to help adults learn English

If you are interested in helping an adult communicate in English and learning about other cultures, you will want to attend Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley's tutor training workshop.

The four-session workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 12, 14, 19, and 21 at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley helps adults read, write, speak, and understand English by matching them with trained volunteer tutors one to one.

The adult students have come from more than 40 different countries to build better lives for themselves and their families.

With a little help, they can be fully involved members of our community.

The workshop provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can be a volunteer.

Volunteers do not need to know a second language or have a professional teaching background to make a difference.

Volunteers get guidance and support when needed. Experienced tutors are glad to share what they have learned.

From week to week, volunteers see their students get more comfortable and fluent in English and they know that they are making a difference in their students' lives.

Volunteers also benefit as they see the results of their efforts and broaden their understanding of values and lifestyles other than their own.

To register for training, call/text Peg Coker at (630) 584-4428 or visit www.lvfv.org/events/trainingschedule.

The fall training will be 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10, 12, 17, and 19, at the St. Charles Public Library.
