Browse collectibles at annual Heritage Fair

The McHenry County Historical Society's annual Heritage Fair returns from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 14, on the museum grounds, 6422 Main St. in Union. Admission is free.

Wear tie dye to "Go with the Flow" in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival.

A car show sponsored by Intren and TCF Bank will feature sports, classic and antique cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Heritage Fair Car Show features trophies for the top 20 cars and a DJ spinning "oldies."

Vintage cars are being sought for the car show. For information, call Tony at TJ's Klassics, (847) 515-8110. The vehicle show entry fee is $1. The fee benefits the historical society.

Throughout the day, there will be an indoor White Elephant sale with vintage and collectible items, used book and vintage clothing sales, Garden Glitz plant sale, and baked goodies tent.

There also will be free admission to the museum featuring the new exhibit "Prairie Trails to Strange Tales: McHenry County's Earliest Years."

The 1895 one-room school and 1843 log cabin are also open to the public. Kathy Render of the McHenry County Master Gardeners will be discussing the flowers and vegetables planted in the Gannon log cabin garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The garden is planted with old varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers that were available in this area when the Luke Gannon family settled in Grafton Township in the 1840s. The Gannon farm was on Ackman Road. In 1964, Ed Gannon, a grandson of Luke, donated the cabin to the historical society.

At 10:30 a.m., a live antique auction takes place on the museum lawn under a tent with auctioneer Russ Davis. The auction starts at 10:30 a.m., with registration and preview beginning at 9 a.m. There is a $2 registration fee.

The featured entertainment is the Clef Hangers Barbershop Quartet performing from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bring the kids to the Pioneer Children's Area from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The return of the Cake Walk at 1 p.m. will celebrate the music of the 1960s. Freddy Fredricks Magic Show will feature roving magicians throughout the day, plus special magic shows on stage at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Food vendors include kettle corn tent, Kona Ice and Boy Scouts Troop 153.

This year's home-baked pies contest features three categories: fruit, berry and other. No cream pies, please. Interested bakers can register their pies between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. The entry fee is $2. Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m., with ribbons awarded to the winners in each category.

A grand prize winner will earn a special prize. All pies will be sold by the slice immediately following the judging at the bake sale, with the exception of the grand prize winner, which will be sold as part of the auction.
