CLC adjunct sociology professor wins state Outstanding Faculty award
Maria Jose Tenuto, a College of Lake County adjunct sociology professor, was named the state's 2019 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty of the Year by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.
Tenuto, who received the award at a June 7 awards banquet in Itasca, is the first CLC adjunct to receive the honor. In May, she received CLC's 2019 Outstanding Part-time Faculty award, based on student votes.
"It is an honor to receive both the CLC Outstanding Faculty Award and the ICCTA state award, especially considering the caliber of great work being done at CLC and other Illinois community colleges by colleagues," Tenuto said. "I am grateful to be able to contribute to CLC's mission of bringing educational opportunities to the community."
Tenuto, who began teaching at CLC in 1998, currently teaches Introduction to Sociology as well as Being Different: The Sociology of Deviant Behavior. She also has taught non-credit courses for the Discovery program designed for residents age 50 and above. Discovery course content has focused on the Amish as well as popular culture, examining the sociological messages in movies such as "Superman," "Star Trek," "Star Wars" and "The Lone Ranger."
Tenuto holds a B.A. and M.A. in sociology from DePaul University.
Fall classes begin Aug. 19. For information about courses and how to apply and enroll, visit www.clcillinois.edu/fall.
