Former member returns to Elgin's First Congregational to preach June 23

This weekend, the Rev. Michael Blackwood of Westminster, Colorado will be returning to First Congregational Church of Elgin to preach on issues related to being gay, Christian and called to ministry in the Congregational tradition.

Blackwood was a lay member of Elgin's First Congregational Church when he was ordained.

While the church has been consciously "unofficially Open and Affirming" over the years with a number of lesbian and gay members, they are investigating at this time whether they should seek formal designation of "Open and Affirming" status, a more public witness at a time when people who are gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual experience themselves as under renewed attack.

Rev. Blackwood will preach on Romans 8:31-39 in a sermon titled "Just Do It." Services are at 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. at the church, 256 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.

For information, visit www.fcc-elgin.org or call the church office at (847) 741-4045.
