James Glover of Schaumburg is the new president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Illinois Federation. Mr. Glover was sworn in for a two-year term at the organization's annual convention held in Effingham, Illinois on May 14-16, 2019. National NARFE President Ken Thomas attended and was a keynote speaker at the convention and swore in the new officers. Mr. Glover also serves as president of NARFE's Marion W. Payne Chapter 1309 based in Arlington Heights with members from throughout Chicago's Northwest suburbs. Before retiring, Mr. Glover worked for the Railroad Retirement Board in Chicago.

NARFE was founded almost 10 years ago in 1921. Its mission is to support legislation beneficial to current and potential federal annuitants and to oppose legislation contrary to their interests; to promote the general welfare of current and potential federal annuitants by advising them with respect to their rights under retirement laws and regulations and to cooperate with other organizations and associations in furtherance of these objectives. NARFE assists Federal employees and retirees through advocacy and education. The organization also seeks to keep its members informed and engaged on numerous topics and promotes social interaction at its meetings and conventions.

As a national organization, NARFE has state federations that consist of local chapters based in areas with federal employees and retirees. The Arlington Heights Chapter 1309 meets for lunch the second Wednesday of every month at European Crystal Banquets on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights. Meetings include speakers and discussions of current events and topics of interest such as health care costs, robo-calls, scams, electric use, and more. At the meeting on June 12, Illinois 56th District State Representative Michelle Mussman updated those attending on new legislation and the budget..

Membership in NARFE is open to federal retirees, current federal employees, spouses and surviving spouses of those eligible to join NARFE, former federal employees, and any former spouse who is entitled to a federal survivor annuity.
