Library's Summer Challenge is more animated than ever

Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew and Daffy Duck are just a few of the famous characters created by artist and author Chuck Jones - the star of Schaumburg Township Library's Summer Challenge.

All ages are welcome to join the fun by signing up for Chuck Jones Summer of Creativity at the library. There will be reading goals, of course, but also a host of activities, creative classes and quests.

Once you sign up, you can download the reading and activity log that explains what you need to do to earn badges. Activity, Quest and Imagine choices include experiencing the StoryWalk at the Spring Valley Nature Center, planning a vacation using the library's travel section, visiting Schaumburg's Sculpture Park, making a bird feeder, and more.

Be sure to turn in your completed log by Saturday, Aug. 17. On that date, everyone is invited to the Summer Challenge Wrap Up Party from 1-3 p.m. in The Commons on the library's first floor. There will be crafts and activities, along with special prizes for everyone who brings in their Summer Challenge log.

Throughout the summer, there will be plenty of opportunities to let your creative juices flow by attending free classes offered through The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. All of the dates and times are listed in the Chuck Jones section of the June-July Guide.

ACME Factory Steam Lab, for third- through sixth-graders, will take place at various times and dates throughout June and July at the Lab in kidsZone. Kids can take part in 15-minute sessions in which they'll design and build their own ACME Factory creations.

Daffy's "How to Draw" classes for all ages will be held Saturdays in Workshop. In these 20-minute sessions, participants will learn to draw different Looney Tunes characters while Looney Tunes cartoons play on the big screen.

Animation Academy, for ages 12 and older, includes five stand-alone classes designed to cover multiple steps involved in creating an animated cartoon. You can come for just one, or attend the whole series.

And that's not all! The library also has an exhibit on both floors, with original drawings, a mock-up of Chuck Jones' office and much more. You'll find Chuck Jones' archives, artifacts and featured works; his animation desk; and a museum collection recently on display nationwide with The Smithsonian Museum Institute Traveling Exhibitions.

Roam through The Commons and lobby on the first floor, as well as the area in front of Teen Place on the second floor to see many of the exhibits.

In addition to all the Summer Challenge fun, the library has countless programs, concerts, special events, classes, bus trips and more on the summer agenda. Check out the June-July Program Guide at www.schaumburglibrary.org.
