Cook County Health Celebrates Global Running Day

With all the rainy weather in Chicago, maybe it has been hard for you to get out and be active. Maybe running just isn't for you, or you aren't able to run.

Well, as the month of June kick starts, Cook County Health wants to remind its residents to get up, get out and be active. And, there is no better time to get started than Global Running Day.

Just getting out and exercising is important, not just for your body, but for your mind. Running reduces stress. And, you might even be able to sleep better. The list of benefits is long.

For example, research shows that if you run five minutes a day, you decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease by 45 percent and increase your life expectancy by three years.

If you aren't able to run, take a simple walk outside to get your heart rate going and your blood moving. Grab a friend if you don't like exercising alone. Many people have found this to be helpful, and it keeps them accountable. If you are unsure about what exercise program is best for you, check with your primary care provider and get moving today.

Happy Global Running Day!
