Need a book for your club? Schaumburg library can help

What's better than reading a book? Sharing your insights with others who have read it. One of the best and most popular ways to do this is by joining a book club. At the Schaumburg Township District Library, we have many resources for book club members. First, of course, we have the books, but more than that, we have services and materials to make book club participation easy and convenient.

Let's start with Book Club in a Bag, which provides 10 copies of a book plus a folder of material, including discussion questions, all in a sturdy tote bag. There are more than 100 kits from which to choose, including classics like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Pride and Prejudice" and newer, popular titles like "The Circle" and "All the Light We Cannot See." The Book Club in a Bag kits are included in the library's catalog. Groups can reserve a kit up to a year in advance. For information about the kits, contact the Fiction Desk at (847) 923-3140.

If your book club needs ideas for what to read this summer, come to the Book Club Open House taking place twice in June. The first is scheduled from 1-2 p.m., Monday, June 10, while the second takes place the following evening from 7-8 p.m. There's no registration or fee, so just stop into Workshop on the library's first floor, where a librarian will be on hand to offer suggestions and explain more about our book club resources. You'll have the opportunity to connect with other readers, while enjoying refreshments provided by the library. Another way to get book suggestions is by attending What are you Reading, slated from 10-11 a.m. on Mondays, June 3 and Aug. 5. This program also takes place in Workshop, with a casual, drop-in format. Participants share thoughts on books they've read, which often results in additions to reading lists.

For those who would rather read on a device, the library offers circulating Kindles. Perfect for summer travel, three of our circulating Kindles are loaded with fiction best-sellers, two with nonfiction best-sellers, and one with titles only available in the eBook format.

"It's a great way to check out a small library of titles all on one device, so there are many options to choose from," said Fiction Librarian Amy Peterson.

The fiction device includes popular titles such as "Where the Crawdads Sing," "The Silent Patient," and "Connections in Death," while the nonfiction device includes biographies such as "Becoming" by Michelle Obama and "Grateful American" by Gary Sinise. It also has self-help selections, including "Girl, Stop Apologizing" by Rachel Hollis and "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo, as well as historical titles including "Indianapolis" by Lynn Vincent and "Leadership In Turbulent Times" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The eBook only device includes titles from authors such as James Patterson, Jodi Picoult and J.K. Rowling, which are only available digitally. These devices can be checked out at the Fiction Desk on the first floor. For more information about the Kindles, call (847) 923-3140.

Whether you prefer to feel a book in your hands and hear the swish of turning pages, or have numerous titles loaded onto a Kindle, you can count on the library to provide it. We hope you'll enjoy the summer and all it has to offer, including the chance to relax and read a book or two. And while you're at it, don't forget our Summer Challenge: The Chuck Jones Summer of Creativity! In this interactive experience, all ages can earn badges by reading and completing activities while appreciating the art behind characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Wile E. Coyote. The Summer Challenge takes place from June 1 through Aug. 17. Sign up at www.schaumburglibrary.org/read or in person starting June 1 at the library.
