Elgin Kiwanis Club wins fourth straight Trivia Bee championship

On Saturday, April 27, The Literacy Connection hosted its 22nd annual Trivia Bee fundraiser.

Eighteen teams came out to Elgin Community College to compete for the title of Trivia Bee Champion. This year, the event will be held at a new venue, ECC's Dining Room.

After three rounds of 50 questions and a sudden-death round to break the second-place tie, the big winner was Kiwanis Club of Elgin making this the fourth year in a row that the Kiwanis team has claimed the title!

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Elgin team included John Steffen, Deb Stowell and Tom Cotter.

Team Christenson edged out the third-place team in a sudden-death tiebreaker round to secure the second-place trophy.

The team was named in honor of former board member, donor and tutor Gary Christenson included Nate Christenson, Tom Christenson, Shawn Mikulay, and David Sujak.

Rounding out the top there teams in this year's Trivia Bee was Elgin Noon Rotary Club. The four-team members competing for Rotary Club were Vincent Barbosa, Dave Burisek, Rick Mogler, and John Regan. Winning team members received individual trophies and gift cards.

Stew Cohen, former news director for WZSR Star 105.5 and WFXF 103.9 radio stations, was the master of ceremonies. Cohen read the trivia questions in three increasingly difficult rounds of competition.

The fundraiser included raffle drawings and more than 45 gift basket raffle items. The grand-prize winners were Chris Mueller, who won Cubs tickets; 3 Blues Brothers and 1 Blues Sister, who won $300 cash; and David Sujak who won a 43-inch Ultra High Definition Smart TV.

Prizes were donated by businesses, organizations, community members, board members, volunteers, and staff of The Literacy Connection.

The agency would like to thank all of the teams, spectators, donors and volunteers who helped make this year's event both successful as well as entertaining! With all your support, you helped the nonprofit organization to raise an estimated $15,000 to further its mission.

The Literacy Connection serves 16 northwest suburban Chicago communities including Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood, and Schaumburg.

The agency provides customized one-on-one adult tutoring, English conversation groups, and family literacy programs.
