Blackwell Forest Preserve offers kids fishing derby

Anglers 15 and younger are invited to drop a line at the annual "Just for Kids Fishing Derby" from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 9, at Silver Lake at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

The free family-friendly event awards prizes in four age categories to anglers who catch the largest of three types of fish or who win the casting contest. The awards and a raffle are announced at the end of the program.

Families can register for the Just for Kids Fishing Derby online around the clock, through Visitor Services weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (630) 933-7248, or at the event.

The entrance to Blackwell is on the north side of Butterfield Road (Route 56) a quarter-mile west of Winfield Road and one mile east of Route 59.

Throughout the morning, anglers also can talk with forest preserve fishing pros about tips and tricks for fishing DuPage waters.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the forest preserves, which have more than 30 lakes, ponds and rivers stocked with bass, pike, walleye and other species. Maps and creel limits are online and in the forest preserve district's fishing guide.
