Kiwanis Club of Elgin awards grant to crisis center

The Community Crisis Center Inc. received a $1,500 grant in February from Kiwanis Club of Elgin that will assist in eliminating the barriers to nutrition, health and education experienced by the children in the center's Shelter Program.

For 43 years, the Community Crisis Center has been meeting the needs of individuals and families experiencing unimaginable crises and barriers related to poverty and domestic violence.

Services for children include individual counseling, children's domestic violence support group, play groups, homework groups, games and crafts group, and a parenting group for adults in the Shelter Program; and children's group counseling for walk-in clients.

Each year, approximately 200 children spend 3,500 nights in the Shelter Program and another 200 children receive walk-in services.

The Kiwanis Club of Elgin has partnered with the Crisis Center for years to improve the lives of our youngest clients.

"We are grateful to Kiwanis Club of Elgin for their investment in our agency. The club understands the need to protect our most vulnerable resource, the children," said Gretchen Vapnar, Crisis Center executive director.

Community Crisis Center Inc. is a nonprofit organization funded in part by the federal, state and local government, United Way of Elgin, Fox Valley United Way and other local organizations.
