Over half of St. Philip the Apostle School students place at regional science fair

More than half of the eighth-graders from St. Philip the Apostle School in Addison won awards at the Regional Science Fair at St. Francis High School March 8.

Twelve students, out of the class of 20, won bronze, silver or gold awards for their science exhibits on subjects ranging from physics to consumer science.

The winners included:

• Bronze award: Jacob C.

• Silver award: Joslynn E., Amari T.B., Anne O.

• Gold award: Caitlin M., Miabella D., Giuliana O., Philip S., Sofia A., Lauren L., Adrian S. and Erica S.

The following students will present their exhibits at the Illinois State Science Fair May 4 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

• Miabella D. and Giuliana O., "Heart Rate versus Caffeine" (health sciences)

• Philip S., "The Physics of Cheating in Baseball" (consumer science)

• Sofia A. and Lauren L., "Don't Drag Me Down" (physics)

• Adrian S., "What Type of Onion Makes Your Eyes Tear Up Most?" (chemistry)

• Erica S. "Think Fast!" (behavioral science)

School science teacher Susan LoSchiavo mentored the students throughout the process of creating their science exhibits. "Each student took a lot of time to determine their topic, develop a hypothesis, conduct experiments and then create a display showing their results. Some of this year's topics were challenging," she said.

Principal Julie Noonan said, "We're proud of the work and dedication that our eighth graders put into their science projects. It's wonderful that so many of them placed at regionals and will be representing our school at the state science fair."

St. Philip the Apostle School serves preschool through eighth-grade students from Addison and the surrounding communities.
