West Chicago names new assistant superintendent
A longtime educator, Gloria Trejo, has been named assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in West Chicago Elementary District 33.
Trejo, who has worked in the district since 2001 and in education for 19 years, will replace Kristina Davis, who recently was named interim superintendent for the 2019-2020 school year.
Trejo currently is principal at Pioneer Elementary School after working in numerous capacities in the district, including lead teacher and director of second language learners. Before joining District 33, she worked in the Bloomington Public Schools and Chicago Public Schools. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
District officials said Trejo was instrumental in developing and expanding the district's dual language and special education programs.
In 2015, she participated in the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents Leadership Academy, where she represented the state and collaborated with administrators across the country.
As a result of her collaboration, she helped establish the state affiliate group, Illinois Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, which was nationally recognized in 2015.
She was awarded "Latino Administrator of the Year" through the National Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents in April 2017.
In 2018, Trejo was named both DuPage Elementary Principal of the Year and Illinois Elementary Principal of the Year through the Illinois Principal Association. In June 2018, she was selected by the National Association of Elementary School Principals and was inducted into the National Distinguished Principals Program.
She currently represents District 33 on Gov. JB Pritzker's Educational Success Committee to advise and guide the administration on educational issues. She also serves on the Illinois State Board Evidence-Based Funding committee.
Over the next few months, Trejo will be working with Davis to ensure a smooth transition before officially assuming her new duties on July 1.
