ESO, Barrington library partner to present Listeners Club with Jim Kendros

The Barrington Area Public Library and the Elgin Symphony Orchestra have partnered to present free Listeners Clubs with music lecturer and composer Jim Kendros on select Thursdays at 2 p.m. The programs are free. Register at barringtonarealibrary.org/library-events.

The inaugural meeting May 2 explores the final masterpieces of Gustav Mahler and Aaron Copland. Copland's Symphony No. 3 has been called the "great American Symphony' for its distinct sound portraying the optimism and hope of a nation. Mahler's Adagio from Symphony No. 10 reflects the raw emotions of a frail and tormented man.

On Wednesday, May 1, Kendros continues his ESO Listeners Clubs discussions at 11 a.m. at Greenfields of Geneva, 0N801 Friendship Way, and 1 p.m. at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., in Elgin. The Listeners Clubs are offered on the Wednesday before the ESO Classic Series concerts.

Kendros will discuss the ESO's "Concerts for the Common Man," with works by Mahler and Copland. Participants in the Listeners Club are invited to ESO events including lunches, potlucks, backstage tours, closed dress rehearsals, and more.

You never know who will show up to join Kendros at the Listeners Club - ESO Music Director Andrew Grams, an ESO musician, or a guest conductor!

You must register for the library lecture at elginsymphony.org. There is no need to register for Greenfields, just sign in at the door. Call the ESO office at (847) 888-0404 ext. 238 to confirm in advance.

Kendros' goal is to make each seminar the most exciting, educational and entertaining presentation available. As a well-known public speaker in the Chicago area, he has lectured for corporations, community centers, libraries, senior facilities, and groups of all kinds. In addition to leading the ESO Listeners Clubs, Kendros is the Pre-Concert Lecturer for the Lake Forest Symphony and the Northbrook Symphony. He also is a composer and performer on piano and rare period instruments. For more information, visit jimkendrosmusic.com.

For its season finale, the ESO, led by Music Director Andrew Grams, will present "Concerts for the Common Man" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in downtown Elgin.

After the Saturday performance, concertgoers are invited to Mingle with the Musicians at Bennigan's Elgin. Free snacks and cash bar.

Tickets start at $30 or $11 for youth/students. For tickets, visit ElginSymphony.org or call (847) 888-4000.
