St. Charles History Museum marks Preservation Month with special events

The month of May is designated as National Historic Preservation month, and the St. Charles History Museum will be holding a variety of events and programs in recognition and celebration of the occasion.

"This Place Matters" is a national campaign by the National Trust that encourages people to celebrate the places that are meaningful to them and to their communities.

The St. Charles History Museum, St. Charles Historic Commission, St. Charles Public Library, the St. Charles Park District, and the Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley will team up to hold several free programs throughout the month of May that highlight the importance of preservation and the history of St. Charles:

• Dr. Steve Smunt of the St. Charles Historic Preservation Commission will host "This Old House - St. Charles" at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in the Carnegie Community Room at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. Smunt will talk about the history of some of St. Charles' most notable homes. Smunt will share his experiences in preservation and cover the following topics on old houses: why we love our old houses; the process of obtaining landmark status; a case study of the Emma Durant-Lane house; plaque programs; and the historic preservation movement in St. Charles.

• Carol Yetken, Landscape Architect and Historian of CYLA Design will host a presentation on the History of St. Charles Parks at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. The program is organized by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley.

• On Saturday, May 18, the History Museum and St. Charles Park District will partner to hold a Historic House Walk through the Pottawatomie neighborhood. The walking tours begin at 11 a.m. in Pottawatomie Park, with tours departing every half-hour until 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, courtesy of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Geneva.

• On Saturday, May 25, during the St. Charles Fine Arts show, the St. Charles History Museum will hold a living-history presentation at the museum, 215 E. Main St., with Civil War re-enactors who will provide information on the 8th Illinois Cavalry, which trained in St. Charles.
