City of Evanston and Brink's Partner to Assist Seniors and Disabled Residents With Transportation Needs

The City of Evanston announced it has partnered with The Brink's Company to upgrade its transportation program for seniors and disabled residents through the implementation of the Brink's Business Expense card. The new Brink's Expense debit cards (distributed by The City of Evanston) allows participants to deposit transportation-dedicated funds and benefit from the city-sponsored matching funds program.

This innovative program allows seniors and citizens with disabilities to travel within Evanston and throughout Illinois using any form of transportation including buses, trains, taxis and rideshare services such as Lyft and Uber. The existing paper coupon system limits travel to Evanston and two neighboring municipalities, and restricts the mode of transportation to taxis.

"We are very pleased to offer this new program to our residents," said Audrey Thompson, Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the City of Evanston. "Transitioning from coupons to the Brink's card gives our citizens significantly more flexibility and more transportation options to travel not only within Evanston but throughout the state."

In addition to more transportation options, transitioning from the coupon system to the Brink's Expense card offers citizens additional security. Coupons can be lost or stolen, resulting in lost value, however, with the Brink's Expense card, lost or stolen cards can be cancelled immediately and new cards issued.

"We are proud and grateful to be a part of this partnership to provide the seniors and disabled residents of Evanston with improved access to transportation through the utilization of our Brink's Expense cards," said Miguel Zepeda, Director of Brink's Money. "The Global Payments Team at Brink's Money is focused on providing expert assistance to clients every step of the way."

To qualify for the Evanston Benefit Card, applicants must reside in Evanston, be over the age of 65, or under the age of 65 with a disability, and have an annual income of $30,000 or less for a household of one. Applicants must provide proof of residency, age/disability, and income at the time of their in-person application. Qualifying participants may apply for the Evanston Benefit Card and the State of Illinois' Benefit Access Program by visiting https://www.cityofevanston.org/residents/senior-services/subsidized-taxicab-program.
