Inside Writing & Publishing workshops return to Schaumburg library

Writers of all levels, from rookie to seasoned, whether unpublished, self-published or traditionally-published, will have the opportunity to improve their craft through free workshops and seminars in April and May.

"Inside Writing and Publishing" is an annual offering of writing programs hosted by libraries in North and Northwest suburban Chicago. The Schaumburg Township District Library is among them, and will host three programs designed to help writers succeed. All of the following programs take place in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Books will be available for purchase and signing following some of the presentations.

To register for these free programs, call (847) 923-3437 or sign up online at www.SchaumburgLibrary.org.

The series kicks off with "Nail that Pitch: How to Talk to Agents and Editors," from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, presented by multi-published author Susan Miura. Writers planning to pitch a manuscript will learn how to prepare for, conduct and follow up a meeting with an agent or editor. Miura will offer tips on what to bring, what to expect, and how best to respond to comments and questions. Participants will also learn key phrases to know, and hear comments gleaned from seasoned agents and editors. Miura is the recipient of a 2018 Readers' Favorite book award and Royal Dragonfly book award.

Coming up next is "Types of Editing and When You Need Them," from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, presented by Editor Kaylynn Hills of Hickory Editorial Services. Writers will learn about the different styles of editing, their specific purposes, and in what order they should occur during the publishing process. This session will be particularly valuable for those new to publishing or who have not yet been published.

The series will conclude with "Why These Words? An Actor Looks at Dialogue," from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2. Author and actor Diane Piron-Gelman will bring an actor's perspective to the fine art of writing dialogue. She will discuss the differences between verbal and written conversations, focusing on what works on the page, and what does not. Participants will discover the compelling reasons for characters to talk, and how to use their conversations to move a story forward, add emotion, create conflict or reveal important information.

In addition to Schaumburg Township District Library, libraries offering "Inside Writing and Publishing" programs are Deerfield Public Library, Des Plaines Public Library, Ela Area Public Library and Fremont Public Library. Free writing and editing programs can be found on each of these library's websites.
