Money Smart Week at Prospect Heights Library

Money Smart Week® is coordinated by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and partners with The American Library Association. Its mission is to promote personal financial literacy. This year the Library will be offering these Money Smart Week programs:

Make the Most of Social Security Wednesday, April 3, 7:00 - 8:30 pm Mike Heatwole, Certified Financial PlannerTMand Founder of The Dala Group, will provide details on the various filing strategies available to single individuals, married couples, divorced individuals, and widows. Also covered will be social security earned income limits and the taxation of social security benefits. Register.

Save Money: Know Your Public Transportation Options Thursday, April 4, 10:30 am An RTA Mobility Outreach Coordinator will discuss public transportation options for area seniors and residents with disabilities. Topics include accessible travel, reduced fare and ride free cards, Ventra, and local transit options (including ADA Paratransit). There will be time for questions and signing individuals up for a reduced fare card to get half off on Metra, Pace and CTA fixed route services, if eligible. Handouts and maps will be given. Top 12 IRA Mistakes Thursday, April 4, 7:00-8:30 pm Join Aaron Buehler, CRPC®, financial advisor with Edward Jones, to learn how to avoid pitfalls when investing in an IRA. Topics covered include what to do when you inherit an IRA, how to avoid costly tax mistakes, Roth IRAs, conversion strategies, and other estate planning tips. Register. Utility Savings Workshop Friday, April 5, 1:00 pm An expert from the Citizens Utility Board will discuss the latest utility programs and policies, and how they'll impact your bottom line. Learn about free programs designed to help cut your utility bills, how to decode your electric and gas bills and avoid scams, and how basic energy efficiency can boost your home's comfort while saving you money. You may bring your utility bills to use as reference. Register.
