Submitted by Lake County Forest Preserves

With spring in full bloom and temperatures inching higher, the Lake County Forest Preserves has a variety of activities planned. Here are a few options for May.

• "Walk with a Naturalist" takes place from 9-10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 4, at Grassy Lake Forest Preserve, 23900 W. Kelsey Road, Lake Barrington. Participants take part on a guided walk to discover the rolling hills, woodlands and marshes at the 689-acre forest preserve.

• Come dressed in your favorite comic book character costume for "Free Comic Book Day" at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 4. Visitors will receive a free comic book from Dreamland Comics in Libertyville while supplies last. Participants can make superhero crafts and learn about the comic book art of Alex Ross.

• The annual Native Plant Sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 11; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, May 12, at Independence Grove in Libertyville. Native flowers and woody plants, rain barrels and compost bins will be available to purchase. While shopping, visitors can learn about eco-friendly practices and gather tips for buckthorn removal from a restoration ecologist on May 11. Rain barrels and compost bins will be sold May 11 only.

• "Community Campfire Friday Nights" runs from 7-9 p.m., Friday, May 17, at Greenbelt Cultural Center in North Chicago. Gather with friends and family to roast marshmallows, share stories and enjoy nature at night.

• Help your little ones become mini historians as they explore and learn about historical objects, create family trees and more during "Small Discoveries: Mini Historian." Registration is required for the program taking place from 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, at the Dunn Museum. Open for children ages 2-5, the cost is $3 for children, $6 for adults and includes Museum admission.

• The County Pop Con Pre-Party takes place from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 25, at the Dunn Museum. Visit the Museum ahead of the County Pop Con at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake to show off your cosplay, tour the exhibition "Marvelocity: the Art of Alex Ross" and participate in superhero activities. At 1 p.m., join comic book writer and artist Gene Ha to "Draw Yourself as a Superhero."

Before attending, program participants are asked to visit LCFPD.org/calendar or call (847) 968-3321 for registration requirements, program updates and cancellations.
