Registration open for Spring Iconography Workshop

St. George Byzantine Catholic Church in Aurora will host an Iconography Workshop April 1-5, at the church, 720 Rural St.

This is an introduction to the liturgical art of the Christian East by iconographer Phil Zimmerman.

The icons to be written are martyr John the Baptist, who is often painted with angel wings, or Mary of Egypt, an ascetic saint who lived in the late fifth and early sixth century.

Painting and presentations will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Great artistic talent is not required.

Supplies are included in the $300 registration fee.

The registration deadline is March 25, but interested participants should register immediately as space is limited.

Registrants do not have to be parishioners of St. George.

For more information or registration, call (630) 851-4002.

Since 2002, St. George has hosted an iconography workshop. Students are taught the techniques and theology of writing icons over the course of a one-week session.

Icons are at the center of Byzantine worship, providing windows into the mysteries of the incarnation, heaven and the redemption of man.
